Ordering Furniture Around Dashain and Tihar: A Realistic Timeline

Two things happen at once. First, demand spikes — families traditionally refresh a sofa set, a dining table or a child's bedroom furniture around this time, alongside the wider wave of home cleaning and redecoration before Dashain. Second, supply capacity actually shrinks for part of the season: workshops close for the main tika days and again around Tihar, staff travel to home districts, and timber or hardware suppliers reduce dispatch during the same window. The result is a squeeze where order volume goes up right as production days go down.

Intercity cargo compounds this. Transport operators serving Pokhara, Butwal, Biratnagar and Dharan routes get booked heavily with festival travel and goods traffic, so furniture cargo — which isn't usually time-urgent the rest of the year — ends up competing for space with everything else people are shipping home for the festival.

Even close to the festival, some things remain workable: minor repairs and re-polishing of existing furniture, simple ready-stock purchases if the model is in stock, and small custom items like a single side table or a TV unit that doesn't need heavy joinery. What becomes genuinely difficult close to Dashain is a full living room set, a made-to-order wardrobe requiring multiple finish coats to cure properly, or anything needing intercity cargo dispatch within the final week before tika — cargo slots that close simply won't reopen in time.

If you're deciding between a rush order and waiting, ask directly whether curing and drying time for polish or lamination can be safely compressed — some finishes genuinely cannot be rushed without affecting durability, and a workshop that tells you this honestly is doing you a favour, even if it's not what you wanted to hear.

Even after a piece is ready, delivery during the days immediately before Dashain and Tihar is slower than usual — Valley traffic around Koteshwor, Satdobato and Ring Road junctions gets heavier as people travel and shop, and some residential societies restrict vehicle access during major puja days. Build in a delivery buffer of at least 3-5 days before the date you actually need the furniture in place, rather than scheduling delivery for the day before tika itself.

Mangsir, following soon after Tihar, is a major wedding season in Nepal, and many households ordering furniture for a wedding — bedroom sets, wardrobes, dining furniture for a new household — are competing for the same workshop capacity that has barely recovered from the festival rush. If you're furnishing for a Mangsir wedding, treat your booking cutoff the same way as a Dashain order: early Bhadau to mid-Asoj for custom pieces, with ready-stock confirmed well before Kartik ends.

Work backwards from your target date. Identify whether you need custom or ready-stock furniture, add the realistic production window, add a delivery buffer for festival traffic, and then check whether your resulting order date falls before or after the Bhadau-Asoj booking window described above. If it falls after, either scale down to a smaller or ready-stock alternative, or accept that the piece will realistically arrive slightly after the festival rather than promising yourself an unrealistic date and being disappointed.
