Bed Sizes in Nepal: A Practical Guide to Choosing the Right Fit

9 min read
Bed frame and mattress sizes displayed in a Kathmandu showroom

Bed sizing in Nepal follows the general regional naming used across South Asia, but the exact inch measurements can vary slightly between manufacturers, which is why two 'queen size' beds from different shops sometimes aren't quite the same dimension. If you've ever bought a mattress separately from a bed frame and found it a couple of inches off in either direction, this is usually why.

This guide sets out the sizes as we build and stock them at Niraj Furniture in Imadol, the mattress types commonly available in the Valley, and — just as important — how to check whether a given size will actually work in your room once you account for wardrobe doors, side tables and walking space, before you commit to an order.

Standard bed sizes used in Nepal

Bed sizes are usually described by the mattress they're built to hold, measured as width by length. The five sizes below cover almost every household need, from a single child's room to a shared master bedroom, though we also build custom sizes for irregular rooms or imported mattresses on request.

Mattress types available in the Kathmandu Valley

Spring mattresses

Coil-based mattresses (bonnell or pocket spring) offer good bounce and airflow, which helps in humid months since less heat gets trapped compared to dense foam. Pocket-spring versions handle two sleepers of different weights better because each coil moves independently, reducing the roll-together effect on a shared bed.

Foam mattresses

Memory foam and high-density PU foam mattresses contour to the body and are popular for their firmness options, but they retain more heat, which some buyers notice during Jestha-Asar nights before monsoon fully sets in. A foam mattress with a ventilated or gel-infused top layer helps offset this.

Coir mattresses

Coir (coconut fibre) mattresses are firm, breathable and a traditional, budget-conscious choice still common in many Nepali households, particularly for children's beds or guest rooms. They're naturally resistant to sagging but firmer than most people expect if they've only used foam before.

Latex mattresses

Natural or synthetic latex sits between foam and spring in feel — responsive, breathable and durable — and is increasingly available through Valley retailers, though usually at a higher weight than foam, which matters if the mattress will be lifted often for storage-bed access.

Matching bed frame to mattress thickness

Mattress thickness has increased over the years — many spring and hybrid mattresses now run 8-10 inches thick, compared to the 4-5 inch coir mattresses common a generation ago. A bed frame designed for a thin mattress can look disproportionate or feel unstable with a thick modern mattress sitting well above the frame's side rails, so tell your furniture maker the mattress thickness you plan to use before the frame is built, not after.

This matters most for platform beds without a separate base, where the frame's side height is fixed at build time. Beds with a slatted or ply base built specifically for a given mattress thickness sit more securely and look proportionate, whereas mismatched combinations are one of the most common reasons customers come back asking for a frame modification.

Storage and hydraulic beds

Storage beds — with drawers, or full hydraulic lift-up bases — are popular in Kathmandu Valley apartments where cupboard space is limited, especially in one- or two-bedroom flats around Imadol and Ekantakuna. Hydraulic storage beds need slightly more mattress lift clearance and a firmer, appropriately weighted mattress that doesn't sag oddly when the base is raised; very soft foam mattresses aren't ideal on hydraulic bases since they can slump at the hinge line over time.

Drawer-based storage beds are simpler mechanically and work with almost any mattress type, but need floor clearance in front of the bed to fully open the drawers, which should be factored into your room layout from the start.

Room clearance: planning space around the bed

Bed size alone doesn't tell you whether a bed will work in a room — clearance does. A queen bed that technically fits a 10x10 room can still make the room feel cramped if there's no space to walk around it or open a wardrobe door beside it. As a general planning guide, leave at least 24-30 inches of walking space on the sides you'll regularly access, and more if that side also has a wardrobe or dressing table that needs door-opening clearance.

In many Kathmandu Valley apartment bedrooms — commonly built to accommodate a queen bed comfortably rather than a king — pushing to king size often means sacrificing a side table or walking space on one side. It's worth measuring your actual room, including door swing and wardrobe placement, before assuming a larger size will fit.

Bedding sizes to match your bed

Once the bed size is set, bedding sizing follows: fitted sheets and duvet covers are sold to match single, double, queen and king dimensions, but locally stitched bedding in the Valley sometimes runs slightly looser than imported standard sizes to accommodate mattress depth variation, so it's worth checking mattress height against the bedsheet's stated pocket depth, especially for thicker modern mattresses over 8 inches.
